Plein air comes from the French en plein air, meaning “in the open air”, and refers to the act of painting outdoors, directly from the landscape, rather than in a studio.
Artists who work en plein air aim to capture the natural light, atmosphere, and immediate impression of a scene. It is about being present, observing life as it unfolds, and expressing those observations in real time.
